At Rick Owens’s autumn/winter 2008 “stag” collection, models with dishevelled, unkempt hair strode out in his exquisitely tailored black creations that Owens himself described as “glunge” – glamour plus grunge.
It is highly theatrical with its array of unconventional shapes of fashion leather bags and imagery of dark sensibility.
And yet in spite of its look of toughness and severity, it is not only a pop culture style toughness and severity, it is not only a pop culture style but also glamorous high fashion ladies handbag collection, supper and eminently wearable.
After studying at the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, Owens took pattern making and draping courses at Los Angeles Trade Technical College and began his own label in 1994.
He started to receive attention when a photograph of Kate Moss wearing one of his leather Casual bag and Backpack appeared in French Vogue.
His first collection was shown during New York Fashion Week in September 2002, winning the council of Fashion Designers of America Emerging Talent Award that year.
