When describing her working practice to Women’s Handbag and accessories Daily, Rei Kawakubo said:“My motivation has always been to create something new that didn’t exist before.”
This simple quest, with which Kawakubo has been engaged for some five decades, has kept her a place at the heart of avant- grade women bags fashion.
The Japanese designer and her brand, Comme des Garcons, which was founded in 1969, hit the international fashion scene in the early 1980s. Along with other Japanese designers, such as lssey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto, Kawakubo began to show her collections in Paris.
The designer’s influence has only grown over the course of her career as she continues to push boundaries, even into her seventies. Landmarks include the Spring/Summer 1997 collection, which featured handbag and dresses padded to distort the wear’s silhouette, and Odeur 53, a fragrance designed to smell like, among other things, burnt rubber.
Her take on retail is equally innovative. A series of temporary “guerrilla stores” has opened in unlikely locations across Europe since 2000, which her Dover Street Market stores in London, Tokyo and New York are the department store reimagined by one of the most unique minds in fashion.
