London born Alexander McQueen followed a trajectory of success after graduating from Central Saint Martins in 1992, with his entire collection-“Jack the Ripper Stalking his Victims; handbag and small leather goods”-bought by fashion patron, and friend, Isabella Blow.
His highly articulate, decorative approach to beauty could perhaps be attributed to his early training on Savile Row where he perfected his impeccable technique and ability to draw with his scissors.
“Eclectic, verging on the criminal” is how he described his work, exploring deeply emotive themes of history and nature “Highland Rape”. A 1996 collection, fashion women handbag collection in bloodied, with savagery usually close to the surface.
His work for Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 showed glimpses of a more mellow McQueen. A comprehensive exhibition of his work entitled “Alexander McQueen: savage Beauty’ was shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 2011
