COMELY HANDBAG
Karl Lagerfeld has enjoyed his eighth decade in fashion.
His image black suit, gloves and tie, high collared white shirt, pompadour and sunglasses has made him so famous that his cat Choupette has her own Twitter account, with tens of thousands of followers.
While Lagerfeld has his own label, his work for others is where his genius lies. “My job” he once said is to bring out in people what they wouldn’t dare do themselves. The Hamburg born designer started early.
His CV boasts a stint at Balmain at the age of 17, followed by periods with Jean Patou, Krizia and Chloe. He was first hired by Fendi in 1965 and remains creative director.
Lagerfeld has managed to keep Chanel and himself relevant for three decades now. He does this by plugging into the zeitgeist. As picture led digital media his grown, Chanel shows have increasingly adopted the wow factor, with an iceberg appearing on the catwalk in 2010, and a Chanel supermarket, complete with fully stocked aisles and shopping trolleys, four years later.
In 2000, asked what inspired him, Lagerfeld replied, Everything there should only be one rule: eyes open! It is this instinct that keeps him right at the top of the fashion three.
