Famous for designing clothes for Blondie’s Debbie Harry, Stephen Sprouse was in the nucleus of New York’s downtown milieu from the late 1970s. His clothes for Harry were typical of his output: an update on 1960s futurism with a punk-influenced color palette of neon Dresses were short ad often featured an asymmetric hemline or a cut out. In addition to Harry, his crowd numbered Andy Warhol, StevenMeisel and transgender model Teri Toye, who became Sprouse’s muse.

Sprouse was born in Ohio and moved to New England to study fashion at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. He lasted three months, dropping out to work for Halston. He remained at the brand the epitome of disco friendly Manhattan chia in the mid 1970s for three years, picking up on the Halston USP of glamour bordering on the decadent.

When he launched his own label in 1983, Sprouse added a streetwise element that made his clothes unique. His first collection featured a graffiti print on acidic colors, two elements that are very Sprouse. While his label was short lived it closed in 1988 Sprouse continued to work in art and design as a freelancer. Recognition for his work came in 2,000, when he collaborated with Marc Jacobs on a series of graffitied bags for Louis Vuitton. His early death in 2004 at the ago of 50 ensure that the Sprouse name and his pop infused aesthetic bleeped onto the radar of a new generation.
