The image of Gianni Versace surrounded by supermodels at the end of his catwalk show was a familiar one throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. It summed up the appeal of this designer. Glamour, beauty glitz and fame were qualities that he channelled into his collections, and he created clothes that were meant to be noticed.
Versace, who was born in Calabria in southern Italy, began designing for brands including Genny and Callaghan in the 1970s. He went out on his own in 1978, drafting in brother Santo and Sister Donatella to help him in the business. Versace’s clothes chimed with the excesses of the 1980s. Short, body hugging handbag and fashion sport bag in bright colours were a signature, with scarf prints and the increasingly recognizable Medusa logo central to collections. Anna Wintour, editor in chief of American Vogue, quipped that, “Versace was always sort of the mistress to Armani’s wife”.
