Pierre Cardin’s 1963 Cosmocorp collection was an unmistakably 1960s moment. This was, after all, a decade known for it youthquake culture, where anything evening living in space was a possibility worth designing for. Pierre Cardin was one of several designers who did so others included Andre Courreges, Rudi Gernreich and Paco Rabanne. Cardin’s USP was centred around simple, almost uniform shapes for both men and women in bright and bold material, with graphic op art patters. Always future thinking, he used the latest raw material like PVC and nylon, and even invented his own, Cardine, 1968. Unisex clothes, including tabards and cat suits, were promoted at his shows, along with cut out fashion bag and miniskirts.
Although this saw him expelled from the prestigious Chambre syndicale de la haute couture, it was a move that was in tune with the times. The democratization of fashion that came with the new decade handbag the designer he was able to design for a younger customer who could now afford his bags.
Speaking in 1969, Cardin argued that we are entering a world of tomorrow and designed his collections accordingly. The designer’s influence endures: Cardin’s brand of futurism is regularly referenced on 21 century catwalks.
