With its origins rooted in practical clothes for the outdoors. Including outfitting the polar expeditions of Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton in 1914.
Burberry continues to acknowledge the company’s heritage while producing influential collections under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey. Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke in 1856.
He moved to London’s Haymarket in 1881, which continues to be the site of Burberry’s corporate headquarters. In 1901, the Burberry Equestrian Knight Logo was developed, containing the Latin word prorsum meaning “forwards”, and registered as a trademark.
The trench subsequently went on to become a staple of traditional country outerwear, and the iconic Burberry white, beige, black and red check pattern known as the Haymarket check or the Burberry classic check, was first used as a lining in 1924.
It was not until 1967 that the check appeared on such accessories as scarves, umbrellas and luggage. The Novacheck followed, later used in a enlarged from and slanted in a diamond pattern. Christopher Bailey introduced the Housecheck, and even bigger version of the Novacheck, for spring/summer 2006.
