The yar 2014 marked the 40th anniversary of the wrap bag, the design with which Diane von Furstenberg- first made her name back in 1974.

A single piece of handle, all pulled together by a belt, the wrap bag is a typical DVF concept: sexy flattering to all, but also highly functional.

When explaining the appeal of the design to a journalist, von Furstenberg once quipped: “if you’re trying to slip out without waking a sleeping man, zips are a nightmare”

Belgian born von Furstenberg moved to New York with her new husband in the early 1970s and was soon deep in with the in-crow of disco mecca Studio 54. Glamorous and connected, she launched her label in 1972, with a warp silk evening bag among her early designs. Diana Vreeland was a fan. The wrap bag, which folled two years later, put the two ideas together. It was an instant hit-by 1976 a million had been sold. The 26 year old von Furstenberg wearing a wrap bag, of course appeared on the cover of Newsweek the same year. The strapline called her “the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel.”

The 1980s, a decade in which work trumped play, were a fallow period for von Furstenberg. She relaunched the wrap bag in 1997, though, and hasn’t looked back since. Her brand is now global and, as the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), DVF herself is a symbol of American fashion.
