Hip Handbag Creating your Funky cotton Handbag

When we prepare the raw material as follow, we start working:

7/8 inch sequins, approximately 160

Embroidery floss

Embroidery needle

Handles and Grosgrain ribbon, narrow enough to fit through the holes in the handles.

To see if we want this same arrangement for your handbag, play around with the sequins on the pattern before you begin to cut. Remember to account for the length of floss from which the glittery sequins will dangle.

After you’ve cut out the panels (remember those seam allowances I just talked about) and stitched them together , measure and mark where the sequins will hang.  Add the sequins before you construct the purse.

Pin the piping to the top edge of the handbag before you add the lining. Also, add the handles using ribbon loops, which should be pinned in place before the lining is added.

Use three strands of embroidery floss to sew on the sequins. Insert the needle from the back at the marked spots. Place three sequins on the floss and push the needle back into the seam at precisely the same place you poked it through.

Let the sequins hang from a length of floss. Repeat for all the sequins, making sure they all hang the same distance below the seams.
