The image of Gianni Versace surrounded by supermodels at the end of this catwalk show was a familiar one throughout the later 1980s and 1990s.
It summed up the appeal of this designer. Glamour, beauty, glitz and fame were qualities that he channeled into his fashion handbag collections, and created
Metal accessories that were mean to be noticed.
Versace, who was born in Calabria in southern Italy, began designing handbag for brands including Genny and Callaghan in the 1970s.
He went out on his won in 1978, drafting in brother Santo and sister Donatella to help him in the business.
Versace’s bags chimed with the excesses of the 1980s with scarf prints and the increasingly recognizable Medusa logo central to fashion handbag collections.
Anna Wintour, editor in chief of American vogue, quipped that, Versace was always
Sort of the mistress to Armani’s wife.
The connection between Versace and sex appeal was sealed in 1994, when Elizabeth
Hurley wore that revealing Versace safety pin handbags.
Although Versace was tragically murdered in 1997, his brand now overseen by Donatella.
