Although he founded his label in 970, Giorgio Armani will forever be associated with the 1980s. His uniform featuring a perfectly cut jacket, wide trousers and simple accessories was also the last word in chic for both men’s and women’s bags throughout the decade.

Amani started as he meant to go on, providing the wardrobe for Richard Gere in 1980’s American Giogolo. With fashion bags playing a central role in the plot (being put on and taken off), the film introduced the designer to an international audience.

Armani’s clothes were crucial to the power dressing minimalism of the decade, when just carry an Armani bags could gain you status in the boardroom.

Armani also pioneered second lines: Emporio Armani and , later, Armani Exchange were introduced for younger customers in search of something more casual.

Born in northern Italy, Armani briefly studied medicine and served in the army before settling on fashion as career. His first job was as a window dresser at La Rinascente, a famous department store in Milan, and he freelanced for a number of Italian brands before setting up on his own.
