His most famous designs bear this out. Balennciaga gave the world the sack bag

In 1956, a design that pre-empted the 106-s shifts by nearly a decade and feels soft causal young fashion bag.

Born near San Sebastian in Spain, Balenciaga showed his talent early: as a teenager he copied couture designs (his mother was a seamstress). He set up his model bags studio in 1916, at the age of 21, and dressed members of the Spanish royal family.

Other innovations included block colors, which he introduced in the late 1950s, and various kinds of fabric bag, which followed in the 1960s, and wide dolman fabric handle bags, which followed in the 1960s.

 Long and teamed with leggings and flats, it read 58% “DON’T WANT PERSHING”, referring to the US Pershing missiles stationed in Britain at the time.

The British designer, who studied at London’s Central Saint Martins, launched her label in 19790 after freelancing for ten years.

Balenciaga was not interested in prettifying with unnecessary details. Instead, his carry bag were often plain but

Sculptural. They put line and proportion first and framed women’s bodies to beguiling effect.

In 1937 he moved to Paris where he spent three decades as a much lauded designer, finally retiring in 1968. Since his death in 1972, other designers have created Ladies bag collections in his name.

The latest is Alexander Wang, the first American to design clothes for this revered European house.

If the late 1950s and early 1960s are acknowledged as a period of architectural elegance in fashion, a large part of that is down to Cristobal Balenciaga.

A leader in his time, and still an influence today, his aesthetic was centred around silhouette and cut.
