If the late 1950s and early 1960s are acknowledged as a period of architectural elegance in fashion, a large part of that is down to Cristobal Balenciaga.
A leader in his time, and still an influence today, his aesthetic was centred around silhouette and cut.

Born near San Sebastian in Spain, Balenciaga showed his talent early: as a teenager he copied couture designs (his mother was a seamstress). He set up his model bags studio in 1916, at the age of 21, and dressed members of the Spanish royal family. In 1937 he moved to Paris where he spent three decades as a much lauded designer, finally retiring in 1968. Since his death in 1972, other designers have created Ladies bag collections in his name.
The latest is Alexander Wang, the first American to design clothes for this revered European house.
