Cardin’s USP was centred around simple, almost uniform shapes for both men and women in bright and bold fabrics, with graphic Op art patterns. Always future thing, he used the latest PU material and even invented his own. Cardin, in 1968. Unisex handbags including tabards and cat suits, were promoted at his shows, along with cut out handbag and wallets.
Cardin’s imagination was honed early on Born in Italy, he worked in fashion from the 1940s onwards, designing with Elsa Schiaparelli, and making costumes for Jean Cocteau’s classis film Beauty and the Beast in 1946. After working with Christian Dior, he launched his own company in 1953, with women’s
Fashion handbag and evening bag.
The designer’s influence endures: Cardin’s brand of futurism is regularly referenced on 21st century catwalks.
